The WIAA board of control met Thursday and voted 8-3 to approve a plan that delays the start of higher risk sports with low risk sports starting on time. The high risk sports of football, boys soccer and boys and girls volleyball will begin practices the week of September 7th. The low risk sports like golf, tennis, swimming, diving and cross country will begin on August 17th. The board did give consideration to the proposal of moving fall sports to the spring but cited the impact it would have on spring sports, weather in the northern part of the state and medical concerns about playing a sport like football in the spring and then beginning the next season in the fall. For schools who are not able to offer fall sports the plan does call for development of spring options for those programs but no plans were given. In other sports news baseball is back tonight as the Twins travel to take on the White Sox first pitch 7:10 and the Cubs host the Brewers at Wrigley field, first pitch 6:10.
