New Beginnings Shelter May Not Open Until 2022

The New Beginnings Shelter could take another year or more to open according to the group running the shelter. After winning a hard fought battle the Elkhorn Alderman agreed to issue a permit allowing the shelter on North Church street. The shelter must first comply with requirements that the city council place on its permit like having at least 27 parking spaces and coming to an agreement with a neighbor on a shared driveway. There is optimism that the agreement with the shared driveway will get done and the parking spaces were already in the original plans. Then the shelter will complete a property ownership transfer with Aurora Health Care who is donating the building. Once the property has been transferred they can raise donations for an interior remodeling and refurbishment of the clinic. The shelter could be ready to open in 2021 but conservatively project the opening to be 2022.
